Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology is a cornerstone department providing comprehensive diagnostic, academic, and research services in infectious diseases. The department operates specialized laboratories in Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Virology, Immunology, and Molecular Biology, supporting accurate and timely diagnosis for effective patient management. The department is actively involved in undergraduate medical teaching with strong emphasis on CBME-aligned training, practical laboratory skills, and clinical correlation. It plays a pivotal role in Hospital Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) programmes, contributing to patient safety, rational antimicrobial use, and public health surveillance. Research activities focus on microbial epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, and translational clinical microbiology.

The department functions with a vision to train competent medical graduates and microbiology professionals while delivering high-quality diagnostic services, research, and infection control support for improved patient outcomes.
